Automation Engineer – Detroit, MI

Location: Detroit MI

Controls Engineer is responsible for the electrical hardware design and software engineering for automation projects on customer orders. This position will work closely with the Program Manager to develop automation concepts into a finalized design. The Controls Engineer will lead the debugging and startup during system commissioning. The Controls Engineer will also work with other team members to develop system manuals and provide end customers with technical documentation and training.

The Controls Engineer performs a variety of duties, including, but not limited to, the following:
• Participate in system risk and safety assessments
• Selection and sizing of hardware components
• Generation of electrical schematics
• Author bill of materials
• Panel layout design and heat calculation analysis
• Pneumatic system sizing and plumbing
• Develop system hardware architecture
• Design of automation network layout
• Write programmable logic controller logic and function blocks
• Develop human machine interfaces
• Commission robots, program paths and touch up points
• Travel onsite for customer startup and commissioning
• Integrate auxiliary equipment: laser markers, parts washers and comparators
• Interface with machine tools for machine tending applications
• Ensure system complies with applicable OSHA / safety standards

Qualifications & Abilities
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience
• 5+ years of experience in electrical hardware design
• Electrical design experience with EPLAN P8 or AutoCAD Electrical
• Programming experience with Siemens TIA Portal / Rockwell Allen Bradley / Mitsubishi
• FANUC, ABB, Kuka robot programming experience
• Safety setup for Fanuc DCS, ABB SafeMove, Kuka Safe
• Robot simulation experience with Fanuc Robo Guide, ABB Robot Studio, Kuka Sim
• Ability to read, write, and speak English
• Business travel is estimated to be approximately 25% for this position
